Cook For Family

A family that eats together stays together.
But a family that cooks together, grows together.

A typical Saturday morning at home would be mummy going to the market at 8am, daddy sweating it out at cycling or golf trips (though he seems to be eating half the time while at it), my lil' brother russell off to MMA training or tuition, and my sister and I snoozing in till my dad wakes us up for breakfast. But last Saturday morning was slightly different, because I decided to get my family to cook together as one!

Because mummy is so good at cooking, I always find an excuse not to cook and basically just be a glutton and be her audience. But when I found out about Daniel's Cook For Family Initiative (from Daniel's Food Diary), I was psyched about it. Firstly, I'm a huge advocate for families eating together. There's nothing more heart warming and blissful than sitting down with your loved ones laughing and sharing stories over a meal. Secondly, it's high time I should start picking up some of mummy culinary skills. You never know when an extra set of skills might come in handy.

We decided to cook Laksa for the family. Reason being, just having gone to Penang for a singing promo gig (will be posting on our Penang trip soon), and not being able to try the famous Penang Laksa or most of the local hawker fare, I was really craving for some hawker dish I haven't had in a long time. And because we don't usually cook Laksa at home, I thought it might be challenging to try out something different.

I have to admit I'm probably more cut out to eat than to cook, so the joint effort of preparing something from scratch makes cooking less tidious, especially for noob cooks like myself. Which is a great encouragement to continue cooking for the family. And isn't that what family is all about; learning and supporting each other along the way. What's more is, if you run out of new things to do with your family, cooking can be a great way to start. I'll let the pictures do the talking on how our spicy Saturday went :)

My mom is a huge believer of cooking things from scratch using fresh ingredients and no pre-mixes. So we had to get up earlier to accompany mummy to get fresh coconut milk, laksa leaves and everything else. Which also means we work doubly hard to pound the rumpah, aka good arm/anger management exercise as we crush and pound the spices together. After hours of frying, boiling, slicing...............

Ta-Da!!!!!!

Special thanks to mummy for teaching us how cook Laksa. Daddy for eating our Laksa. And Love Bonito for the lovely dress :)
